Service Description
The Youth Compass is a five-week program aimed at promoting adolescent well-being. The program consists of short exercises that strengthen mindfulness, acceptance, and value-based skills. The program operates through a web browser on smartphones, tablets, and computers with an internet connection.
Application of Terms of Use
These terms of use constitute an agreement between the user of the program and the service provider. The Youth Compass research group at the University of Jyväskylä’s Department of Psychology (https://jyu.fi/nuortenkompassiplus) acts as the service provider. Using the service indicates acceptance of these terms.
General Terms of Use
Using the Youth Compass program included in the service requires registration. Registration is limited to individuals who are at least 13 years old. During registration, you will be asked to choose a username and password. Please keep your login information secure.
The program is free for the user, but the user is responsible for their own data transfer costs (costs related to internet connection and mobile data transfer).
The service provider reserves the right to modify or discontinue the service for any reason at any time without prior notice.
Copyrights
The copyrights for the information and materials on the website belong to the Youth Compass research group at the University of Jyväskylä’s Department of Psychology (contact persons Noona Kiuru and Päivi Lappalainen), unless otherwise stated. Commercial use of the website's content requires prior permission from the research group.
The website contains links to internet sites maintained by third parties and materials produced by third parties. The research group is not responsible for any content on these sites or materials, unless otherwise stated.
Disclaimer
The service is available to users "as is." The service may occasionally experience software issues or other disruptions related to availability or usability.
The exercises included in the service are based on researched methods known to generally improve well-being, but the service provider does not guarantee their effectiveness for everyone. If you feel you have serious challenges with your well-being, you should seek professional help. The service is not intended for the treatment of clinical mental health disorders and does not replace diagnosis and treatment by a healthcare professional.
Privacy
The service's privacy notice describes how personal data obtained through the service is processed and stored. The privacy notice complies with the Data Protection Act of Finland (Tietosuojalaki 1050/2018).
Changes to Terms of Use
The service is developed and its functionality and content are regularly modified and improved. The service provider reserves the right to change the terms of use at any time at its discretion. The user can close their account by contacting the administration and stop using the service if they do not accept the changed terms of use.
Applicable Law
The use of the service and the interpretation of the terms of use are governed by Finnish law.
Privacy Notice
The Youth Compass research group is committed to protecting the privacy of service users in accordance with data protection legislation. This privacy notice describes how your personal data is processed and stored.
For what purposes is your personal data used and what is the legal basis for processing?
The purpose of processing your personal data is to enable the use of the Youth Compass program, technical maintenance and development of the online service, as well as the development and targeting of the site's functionality. The site stores information provided during program registration, log data generated by using the online service, and data collected through cookies. We primarily aim to minimize the collection of personal data.
The use of cookies other than those that are technically essential requires your consent. The use of cookies is described in a separate cookie notice. The cookie notice is displayed and consent for the use of cookies is requested when you first visit the Youth Compass website. The cookie notice can later be found via the Cookie Settings link. From the same place, you can later modify or withdraw your consent for the use of cookies.
The legal basis for processing registration data and data collected during the use of the program is consent (point (a) of Article 6(1) of the Data Protection Regulation 679/2016). The legal basis for processing service log data is legitimate interest (point (f) of Article 6(1) of the Data Protection Regulation 679/2016). Log data is collected to ensure the secure use of the service (for example, to prevent potential phishing attacks on the service), to improve the user experience across different environments, and for the statistical and analytical purposes of service usage.
What personal data do we process?
Information you provide to us:
- When you register for the Youth Compass program, you choose a username and password. The username is instructed to be chosen in such a way that it does not reveal your identity, but if you choose a username that contains your personal data, this information will be stored.
Service usage data:
- Technical information about the device you use, such as IP address, device type, browser type, and browser version. This information is automatically stored in the server log data when you use the website or the Youth Compass program.
- Log data: The web addresses of the pages you visit on the online service and the times of your visits.

Who has access to your personal data?
Only the Youth Compass research group has access to the aforementioned data. Personal data is disclosed to third parties for processing only to the extent that third parties need access to the personal data we process in order to provide services for the purposes defined in this privacy notice and the cookie notice. This includes, for example, video presentation tools provided by YouTube.
Is your personal data transferred outside the EU/EEA area and how are data transfers protected?
Personal data is not transferred outside the EU/EEA area.
The data of third-party services is processed in accordance with the privacy policies of the service providers and possibly also outside the EU/EEA area. The University of Jyväskylä is not responsible if you use third-party services through the service (e.g., YouTube).
How long is your personal data processed?
Usernames of user accounts registered in the program are anonymized at the earliest when the account has not been logged into for 6 months, and at the latest when the account has not been logged into for a year.
Server log data is retained for a maximum of 1 year.
The retention period for cookies is described in the cookie notice.
What rights do you have as a data subject?
As a data subject, you have the following rights:
- The right to access your data.
- The right to have incorrect data corrected.
- The right to have data erased ("the right to be forgotten") in certain situations.
- The right to restrict processing in certain situations.
- The right to have the data controller notify recipients of your data about corrections, erasure, or restrictions of processing.
- The right to object to processing in certain situations, such as direct marketing.
- The right to have data transferred from one system to another in certain situations.
- The right not to be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing, including profiling, which produces legal effects concerning you or significantly affects you in a similar way.
- The right to be informed of a data breach that poses a high risk.
- The right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
